Purpose

The concept for a scholarship foundation for the Pointe Coupee Parish Public High School System graduating seniors was conceived by the founders Dr. Wilfred Johnson and Mary Daisy Johnson in 2012. We started the foundation because we both felt the need to give back to our community where we grew up and received our educational foundation. We also wanted to show appreciation to all of the individuals who helped us with our development. In this beautiful community of New Roads, Louisiana, we were taught the value of having a rich spiritual life and that education was the key to a better future.  We were also taught to be kind, loving, and be a contributing member of society.

Our goal for the foundation is to raise funds to assist graduates of Pointe Coupee Parish Public High School System with their post-secondary educational financial needs.  In order to make the foundation as successful as it could be, we solicited assistance from other graduates with similar raison d’être of the school system.    We began with a board of seven members who wanted to help graduating scholars fulfill their educational goals.

All members of the foundation felt that it should serve as a platform to give other community members, business leaders, and graduates of Pointe Coupee Parish Schools an opportunity to give back to the community to assist our youth.  The funds developed would be forwarded directly to the institutions as scholarships where these students would matriculate.  Seniors of Pointe Coupee Parish High Public System will be invited to apply for the need-based scholarship; and selected for the scholarship by a blind committee according to application guidelines.

The foundation name “Pointe Coupee Trailblazers Scholarship Fund” was registered and approved on March 7, 2014 and our 501c3 license was granted on August 12, 2014.  We conducted the first fund development campaign on October 18, 2014 where thirty-two donors contributed to the scholarship campaign. Our first two recipients were given a $2000.00 scholarship each to assist with their post- secondary educational financial needs.  We appreciate the contributions of our donors and extend credit to the foundation’s board for their hard work and dedication for sharing their time, skills, in kind contributions, and financial contributions to make the project a success.
